“Stay positive” has almost become a cliche saying. However, if you Google the effects of what a positive mindset can accomplish, you will find that there are endless articles that highlight the benefits and how it can improve your quality of life. I fully believe in this principle and encourage you to focus on shifting your way of looking at everything as it will improve your life in so many areas. We have so much more power over our lives and over circumstances than we are raised to believe.
I also understand how difficult it is to live in a constant positive state of mind. Life is hard. It is extremely difficult to “look on the bright side” when everything seems to be going wrong. Especially when you are stuck in a bad rut or are having a string of bad days. I have been a firm believer in the principle for years and I STILL have to redirect myself when things are not going well. This past week has been especially tough for me and it has taken a lot to keep it all together. It is very easy to give up and say “screw it all” instead of fighting off those negative feelings in order to keep moving forward. But just like anything else you train your body to do, you have to form better habits in order see the benefits. There are ways to improve your life just by training your mind to be more positive. Despite the health benefits of working out or dieting, most decide not to because it is just too difficult to stay on that path. You always have the choice to make things better, it just usually takes more work. If you don’t know where to start, take a look at some tips below:
1. Let go of the things that are out of your immediate control. Stop focusing on factors that you cannot change. Don’t let someone else’s bad attitude, or circumstances that are out of your control bring you down. If there is nothing you can do, why dwell on it? Emotions are out of our hands and you cannot control how you feel about something. You can however control how you react to those emotions. Figure out to deal with those emotions in a healthy manner but do not dwell on them.
2. Be grateful. When things are going south, shift your focus on something you can be grateful for. Again, this is something that has almost become a cliche idea but there is a reason this principle is so popular. When you focus on the things you do have, no matter how insignificant, your will begin to let go of the feelings of deprivation.
3. Take action and be accountable. Please note that there is a difference between taking accountability for a behavior or decision. That means that you see it and you analyze it but figure out ways to make sure you react differently the next time. Weighing yourself down with feelings of guilt will not help anything. It is very easy to fall into a victim mentality but the truth is that most of the occurrences happening in your life are in one way or another ripples of a decision you made. Self-sabotaging behaviors like avoiding issues completely and allowing yourself to let problems completely subdue any action at all are what keep others in a perpetual state of “bad luck”. What most consider to be bad luck is really just bad circumstances that are affects of bad decisions or lack of solutions that could propel one forward but instead hold them down. At some point, people often give up because it all seems like too much.
I wish this was something every parent passed onto their children. I believe if this were the case, there would not be so many people who have given up on life. I know of many adults who have truly never heard this advise. You can see the wheels turning when you start to tell them how much power they really have.
